Before you leave for the scene, begin preparing yourself both mentally and physically. You should begin protecting yourself as soon as you are dispatched. Make sure you wear seat belts and shoulder harnesses en route to the scene. Wear seat belts harnesses at times unless patient care makes it impossible. Many EMS units have mandatory seat belt policies for the driver at all times, for all EMT during transit to the scene and for anyone who is riding with a patient.
